The People Behind PowerMarket: Meet Kathryn Choi

Account Manager

We always want to get to know you but realize that you probably know little about us. This interview series is a way to introduce you to our team.

Our PowerMarket team is lively and hardworking. We are also passionate about clean energy and the benefits it can bring to communities, including many of our own.

So get to know us, learn more about the community solar industry, and always feel free to reach out. In case you haven’t been able to tell, we love talking about community solar and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

What drew you to clean energy?

When I was in high school, I took an AP environmental science class and that is where I learned about climate change and the climate crisis in general. That class opened my eyes to the severity of the issue and it was definitely a shifting point for me. It led me to major in environmental science once I got to New York University. During this time, I was exploring what part of the climate change sector I wanted to go into. One of my close relatives is a big player in the renewable energy procurement industry in California and, ultimately, was the one who inspired me to pursue a career in clean energy.

How did you first hear about PowerMarket and how long have you been at the company?

I heard about PowerMarket through a NYU job posting and both the company and role immediately piqued my interest. I started as an intern at PowerMarket my senior year of college in 2019. I helped with the new state policy research and it was during that time that I realized this was definitely the industry I wanted to be in. I've been here since 2019 - so I’ve been here for almost three years now.

What ultimately made you want to join the PowerMarket team?

For me, it was definitely the work culture. I think there are many companies where this isn’t a priority and PowerMarket’s work culture is outstanding. I realized how much it impacts not just your work performance but also your day-to-day life. When I started at PowerMarket, I could definitely feel the connection and there was an openness between all the employees that was very comforting.

It sounds like PowerMarket’s culture was a big draw for you. How would you further describe it?

I would say it is a culture that is collaborative, warm, and sincere. There’s a lot of transparency and everyone's very honest with each other. We’re all passionate about the clean energy industry and are all very respectful and like-minded as well.

What problems is PowerMarket solving in the industry?

We're bridging the education/knowledge gap between the variety of clean energy options and the actual day-to-day consumer. I think that the platform we have built in and of itself is very extensive and versatile, so it can be applied to shared renewables beyond community solar.

Having been at PowerMarket for so long, how have you seen it change and grow?

I was the first female employee at PowerMarket. Therefore, watching the company grow from that three years ago to now where we are over 50% female is obviously very rewarding for me. That is a huge milestone and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the company.

What makes you excited to come to work every morning?

I get excited to come to work every day because of my colleagues but also the work itself. I have amazing colleagues that I enjoy working with every day. However, it is also equally rewarding to work in the clean energy space and know that I am making a direct impact on improving the climate crisis.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

Well, I grew up in Hong Kong, I speak three languages, and I really enjoy reading. That's a hobby of mine. One of my 2022 resolutions is to read a book a month. I've also always had a passion for event planning and I plan PowerMarket’s social events now. I love bringing people together and for new hires, these events are really important because they’re given a chance to meet with their colleagues and bond as a team.
